We got our first goat in 2001. We added 3 more foundation does and these 4 mixed breed dairy goat lines have been improved over the years by breeding to quality purebred bucks. The herd is registered with the American Dairy Goat Association as experimental. For registering goats with ADGA, our herd name is MMM-BAH. That makes our cheese MMM-BAH good! We jokingly call the goats Alpi-Togg-Manch-San-Nubians, since these five breeds of goats have been mixed together creating hybrid vigor and an overall increase in hardiness. This sturdy herd may lack standard breed appearances but makes up for that in disease resistance and easy kidding. The herd is still growing and improving each year, we are milking 24 this season. We have used the ADGA Linear Appraisal program and DHIA milk test to help improve our herd. The goats test negative for CAE and CL.
We strive to keep our goats as happy and healthy as possible. Our overall animal husbandry strategy is to maintain our goats by providing them optimal living conditions and using sustainable practices, such as feeding them locally grown, top quality feed. While not certified organic, we manage the goats as naturally as possible. We do not feed antibiotics or hormones prophylactically. We only treat animals with conventional medicines when they show symptoms of illness and then withdrawal times are doubled before adding them back into the milking line. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country where parasite problems are low due to the dry climate and cold winters.
All of the goat kids are hand raised to initiate the bond between us and ensure tameness. We have been keeping most doe kids for herd replacements but we sell all the males. We are taking orders for packgoat wethers for 2010. These wethers are hand raised, horned, Alpine-Lamancha crosses and have an initial start on their training.
